The challenge

South African hospitals and clinics had no single record proving that vaccines and blood products stayed in safe temperature range during storage and on the road. Fridge failures, long rural trips and severe weather put stock at risk. Paper sign-offs could not show who received a delivery or whether it was still safe to use.

What we did

  • Built the software and data platform: a FastAPI service with a Django web portal, set up separately for each hospital so one facility never sees another’s stock
  • Added live fridge monitoring with temperature alerts and a power-cut simulator that estimates how long stock stays safe
  • Added journey simulation over the national road network, using SAWS weather warnings for the travel day, a road quality estimate, and a USABLE / REVIEW / DISCARD result for each product
  • Built a digital consignment chain, sealed at dispatch and signed on arrival by the receiving facility’s manager with a two-factor code, which produces a certificate that can be verified
  • Mapped a national registry of 1,831 health facilities
  • Added role-based access, an audit trail, staff training guides and 820 automated tests

The result
